The fact that working serves other than strictly economic functions is an amply substantiated truism. This holds true for professionals and white-collar workers as well as for managers, craftsmen and tradesmen, the service occupations and the skilled and semi-skilled industrial workers. An overwhelming majority of employed men in a national sample stated, for example, that they would continue working even if by some chance they inherited enough money to live comfortably without work. They explained that they enjoyed working, and also that work kept them occupied, justified their existence and enhanced their self-respect, and that without it they would "feel lost" and "go crazy." The work ethos internalized along with other values of the Protestant ethic in America, but equally strongly stressed in all other industrializing countries, has been carried over into life patterns of late industrial society. There it fills that part of leisure time—by "do-it-yourself" occupations and the immersion in "hobby worlds"—which is not passed "educationally," "informatively," "enjoyably" or "boringly" in viewing television. Work being a dominant value-theme of industrial society, the rejection of work is analogously experienced as a rejection of society, followed, in turn, by the negative evaluation on the part of the "working class" of "bearded do-nothings," "hairy parasites," etc.

As occupation has become the dominant status indicator for modern man, the work-world has become central for "establishing" him in many of his other life-worlds in and outside the institutional spheres. A number of professions and occupations also may foster hopes and aspirations for extending the limits of one's physical existence by books written, students taught, pictures painted, services rendered, "empires" built, etc. (Benita Luckmann)
