* Paul A.M. Dirac - Collected Works in Physics (8 books)

PAUL A.M. DIRAC (1902–1984)
was an English mathematical and theoretical physicist who was one of the founding figures of quantum mechanics and among the most original theoretical physicists of the twentieth century. His work is distinguished by its mathematical elegance and its insistence that the fundamental laws of nature should possess great beauty and simplicity. He shared the 1933 Nobel Prize in Physics with Erwin SchrĂśdinger for "the discovery of new productive forms of atomic theory".

Dirac made fundamental contributions to the early development of both quantum mechanics, writing the first ever Ph.D thesis on the subject in 1926, and quantum electrodynamics, coining the latter term. He displayed a striking mathematical precision and austerity of thought that would come to define both his scientific contributions and his personality. Among other discoveries, he formulated the Dirac equation in 1928 describing the behaviour of fermions, regarded by some physicists as the "real seed of modern physics", and in 1931 predicted the existence of antimatter.

He synthesized the new quantum mechanics in his influential book, THE PRINCIPLES OF QUANTUM MECHANICS (1930, with several later revisions). In it, Dirac emphasized the role of abstract mathematical structures and axiomatic reasoning, helping to formalize and deepen the theoretical framework of quantum physics. The book quickly became a classic, shaping generations of physicists and firmly establishing Dirac as one of the leading architects of the quantum revolution.

He also contributed to cosmology, putting forth his large numbers hypothesis, and anticipated string theory well before its inception, with work such as the Dirac membrane and Dirac–Born–Infeld action, along with other contributions important to modern-day string and gauge theories. One of his more accessible works is DIRECTIONS IN PHYSICS (1978), a collection of public lectures which offers a glimpse into his thinking on the philosophical and aesthetic aspects of physics. Even in this more relaxed format, Dirac’s focus on mathematical beauty and logical consistency shines through—principles he regarded as guiding lights in scientific discovery.

Throughout his life, Dirac remained committed to the search for deeper unifying principles in physics. His principal works—spanning from the late 1920s through the mid-twentieth century—continue to influence modern theoretical research and stand as landmarks in the history of science.
