1860. Giuseppe Garibaldi inizia da Quarto l’avventura dei Mille con il suo fedele gruppo di ufficiali e il colonnello Vincenzo Giordano Orsini. Tra i tanti militi reclutati ci sono due siciliani, Domenico Tricò, un contadino emigrato al Nord, e Rosario Spitale, un illusionista. Sbarcati in Sicilia, a Marsala, i Mille iniziano a battersi con l’esercito borbonico. Ma quando è quasi costretto ad arretrare, Garibaldi escogita un piano ingegnoso. Attraverso una manovra diversiva, cercherà di far credere a Jean-Luc Von Mechel, comandante svizzero dell’esercito regio, che le truppe si stiano ritirando all’interno dell’isola.
