* Max Planck - Collected Works in Physics (17 books)
MAX PLANCK (1858–1947) was a German theoretical physicist who many substantial contributions to the field, but his fame rests primarily on his role as the originator of quantum theory which revolutionized understanding of atomic and subatomic processes. He is known for the Planck constant, which is of foundational importance for quantum physics, and which he used to derive a set of units, today called Planck units, expressed only in terms of physical constants. He won Nobel Prize in Physics in 1918 for the discovery of energy quanta.
Beyond his foundational role in quantum theory, Planck made significant contributions to the theory of heat, statistical mechanics, and the philosophical underpinnings of scientific inquiry. His rigorous work on the second law of thermodynamics and his engagement with Boltzmann’s statistical interpretation of entropy reflected a willingness to defend theoretical reasoning against both empirical skepticism and metaphysical doubt. Planck was deeply invested in the philosophical dimensions of science; he upheld the autonomy and objectivity of scientific knowledge and often articulated a realist vision of the natural world governed by intelligible laws.
Among Planck’s major writings, his 1900 paper "On the Theory of the Law of Energy Distribution in the Normal Spectrum" remains central for understanding the origins of quantum theory. His book THE THEORY OF HEAT RADIATION (1914) provides a more developed and systematic presentation of his theory. Equally important are his EIGHT LECTURES ON THEORETICAL PHYSICS , delivered at Columbia University in 1909 and later published in English, which offer a concise and accessible introduction to his thinking at a pivotal moment in his intellectual development. These lectures not only clarify Planck's views on radiation and thermodynamics but also reveal the careful balance he struck between empirical data and theoretical abstraction.
Planck also wrote a number of works for a broader, educated audience, particularly in the later stages of his career. These included WHERE IS SCIENCE GOING? (1932) in which he addressed the state of science during a time of major upheaval, and grappled with the challenges posed by relativity, quantum theory, and the philosophical reactions to these developments. The tone is reflective, even cautionary, and reveals much about Planck’s personal convictions, including his ethical commitment to science in a period of growing ideological extremism. THE PHILOSOPHY OF PHYSICS (1936) is a short work that distills Planck’s philosophical reflections on the nature of scientific knowledge, physical laws, and the relationship between theory and observation. His SCIENTIFIC AUTOBIOGRAPHY AND OTHER PAPERS (published posthumously in 1949) includes autobiographical reflections, as well as essays on determinism, the meaning of science, and the limits of human knowledge. His popular-philosophical writings are marked by clarity, seriousness, and a deep concern for the epistemological and cultural role of science—qualities that make them enduringly relevant today.
