MERE CHRISTIANITY (1942–1944) distills his wartime radio talks into a lucid account of Christian belief aimed at skeptics and lay readers, notable for its argumentative restraint and rhetorical balance. In THE PROBLEM OF PAIN (1940) and MIRACLES (1947), Lewis addresses classical philosophical objections to theism, while THE ABOLITION OF MAN (1943) offers a prescient critique of moral relativism and technocratic education. THE SCREWTAPE LETTERS (1942), though fictional in form, belongs to this apologetic corpus: its satirical epistolary voice allows Lewis to examine temptation and moral psychology with unusual subtlety. Taken together, these works exemplify his talent for translating abstract arguments into accessible prose without sacrificing intellectual rigor.

Beyond apologetics and fiction, Lewis was a serious literary scholar whose academic work shaped the study of medieval and Renaissance literature. THE ALLEGORY OF LOVE (1936) remains a landmark in the history of literary criticism, and his essays on myth, poetry, and reading reveal a critic attentive to both form and moral imagination.
