HOMER (c. 8th century BCE)  was an ancient Greek poet who is widely credited as the author of the Iliad and the Odyssey, two epic poems that are foundational works of ancient Greek literature and the earliest monumental voice of the Western epic tradition.  Both shaped Greek ideas of heroism, honor, and the human relationship to the divine.  Whether "Homer" represents a single poet or the culmination of a long oral tradition remains an open question, but the power and coherence of the epics ensured their central place in Greek education and cultural life from antiquity onward.

THE ILIAD is set during the final weeks of the Trojan War and focuses not on the war’s outcome but on the anger of Achilles.  Through this narrow temporal frame, the poem explores themes of honor, mortality, rage, and reconciliation.  The Iliad is remarkable for its moral complexity: even amid scenes of heroic combat, it grants dignity and sympathy to both Greeks and Trojans, culminating in the shared grief of Achilles and Priam over the losses war inflicts on all sides.

THE ODYSSEY , by contrast, is a poem of return and survival.  It follows Odysseus as he struggles for ten years to reach home after the fall of Troy, encountering monsters, temptations, and hostile gods along the way.  Interwoven with this journey is the story of Penelope and Telemachus, who must endure uncertainty and disorder in Odysseus' absence.  The Odyssey celebrates intelligence, adaptability, and endurance, offering a different model of heroism from the battlefield glory of the Iliad.

Also included here are several translations of the HOMERIC HYMNS , although there is a very strong scholarly consensus that Homer did not compose them as a unified work, and that they are the product of multiple poets over time (roughly 7th–5th century BCE).  Written in the same epic meter and employing similar language and formulas as the major epics, these short to medium-length hymns combine myth, praise, and storytelling, offering insight into Greek theology, ritual, and the cultural world that shaped and received Homeric poetry.

Homer’s influence on later literature is difficult to overstate.  For the Greeks, he was the poet who defined their gods, heroes, and ethical imagination; for later Roman and European writers, he served as both model and challenge.  From Virgil's Aeneid to modern novels and films, the narrative structures and themes of Homeric epic continue to shape storytelling and are enduring explorations of human experience itself.
