Robert Jon & the Wreck â Heartbreaks & Last Goodbyes (2025)
Review:
Southern rockers Robert Jon & The Wreckâs new album Heartbreaks & Last Goodbyes is set to release on August 22 via Joe Bonamassaâs Journeyman Records. Produced by nine-time Grammy winner Dave Cobb (Chris Stapleton, Jason Isbell, Rival Sons), itâs RJ&TWâs ninth studio albumâhard to believeâthis band continues to develop and sound fresh. Recorded in Savannah, GA, the band lived together throughout the writing and recording process. The album is cohesive, reflecting a laser focus on the material and the bandâs interconnectedness. Itâs raw and edgy but somehow their most compact. Heartbreaks & Last Goodbyes is certainly the best RJ&TW album to date. It reflects their evolution as a band with sharp musicianship, emotional songs, and a skilled producer. Robert Jon & The Wreck have hit a new high mark. Bassist Warren Murrel says âFor the first time in our bandâs history, we had the opportunity to live at the studio while recording. Instead of dealing with L.A. traffic and squeezing in sessions between other commitments, we got to immerse ourselves fully in the musicâwriting, recording, and refining songs every day for over a week. It was an experience that allowed us to be completely present in the creative process.â That may not be the norm, but if Heartbreaks & Last Goodbyes is any indication, it should be. The 10-track album draws from the band membersâ real-life experiences, those of love, loss and redemption. Their sound is classic rock hinging on Southern rock and blues rock . Robert Jon Burrison leads the way on vocals and guitar, plus Andrew Espantman (drums, background vocals), Henry James (lead guitar, background vocals), Warren Murrel (bass), and Jake Abernathie (keyboards). The album opens with âSittinâ Prettyâ a high-energy rocker with tight grooves and explosive guitar riffs. A workout for drummer Espantman and guitarist Henry James whose riffs have grown tighter and more inventive, if thatâs possible. Opening with emotional slide guitar, âAshes in the Snowâ is a melodic rock ballad about navigating conflict with a loved one, perhaps on the verge of a breakup. âWeâre just going through the motions,â the soulful Robert Jon sings, âpretending everythingâs alright.â Itâs a beautiful song with a melancholy vibe, the harmonies pristine. Heartbreaks and Last Goodbyes is a big step forward for Robert Jon & The Wreck, perhaps in part by the influence of producer Dave Cobb. The band gels more than ever. This is a big album, crisp, streamlined without compromising the bandâs originality. Among well-written rock & rollers including âHighwayâ, the song âLong Goneâ (co-written with John Oates) is anchored by a killer guitar riff. About loss, the song is a rocking wonder. It has a dreamy bridge that leads right back into that memorable riff. âBetter of Meâ roars to life with a bluesy piano intro that speaks of the 70s, and a wisp of Charlie Daniels in the vibe. Robert Jon is feeling it with this tune, feisty, and definitely in his element. The guitar follows the vocal and it works so well itâs hard to imagine the track without it. Fantastic guitar solo here, soulful and skillful. Among themes of heartbreak, songs such as âDark Angelâ speak of temptation and its dark side. Itâs the question mark before the title track. A moody rock ballad, title track âHeartbreaks & Last Goodbyesâ explores emotional depth and personal expression. The root of the album, it serves as an homage to relationships while being on the road. The highs, lows and triumphs. And the perspective one develops by being away. The song centers on loving someone who lures you in only to tear you down. Robert Jonâs vocals convey heartache over the inner conflict of walking away from love while the embers still burn. Life on the road ainât easy. Heartbreaks & Last Goodbyes has a theme, one of vulnerability and collective struggle. Thereâs one compelling number after the other. But thereâs more to the album than just well-written songs, great musicians and production. The soul of the band is in the music. Is Heartbreaks & Last Goodbyes by Robert Jon & The Wreck a contender for album of the year? Quite possibly. â rockandbluesmuse
