'Star Trek into Darkness' volgt de bemanning van de Enterprise, als zij terug naar de Aarde worden geroepen. Daar ontdekken ze dat een niet te stoppen terreurbeweging binnen de Starfleet de vloot heeft vernietigd, samen met alles waar zij voor staat. Als gevolg daarvan verkeert de wereld in staat van crisis en moet Captain Kirk (Chris Pine) een klopjacht leiden op de verantwoordelijken. Hij blijkt daarbij nog een persoonlijke rekening te moeten vereffenen. Kirk leidt zijn team door een wereld die meer weg heeft van een oorlogsgebied, waarbij vriendschappen verscheurd zullen worden en offers gemaakt moeten worden voor de enige familie die Kirk nog heeft: zijn bemanning.
