THE BEST AMERICAN SHORT STORIES is an annual anthology of stories published in the United States and Canada by some of the best-known writers in contemporary literature.
Essays were chosen using the same procedure as other titles in the Best American series: the series editor, Katrina Kenison (1991–2006) and Heidi Pitlor (2007–present), would recommend about 100 candidates, from which the guest editors picked 25 or so for publication; the remaining runner-up stories were listed in the appendix of each volume.
