In his sixth novel, Robert Penn Warren tells the story of a young man trapped in a cave in fictional Johntown, Tennessee. His predicament becomes the center of national attention as television cameras, promoters, and newscasters converge on the small town to exploit the rescue attempts, and the thousands of spectators gathered at the mouth of the cave.
The book, however, is more than a suspense story, the story of Jasper Harrick trapped in a cave and the attempt to rescue him, but it is also, like many of Robert Penn Warren's books, a character study of the changes in the lives of the book's principal characters, their tangled relationships, and the unresolved dilemmas which they are forced to face during the episode of...THE CAVE.
Robert Penn Warren (1905-1989) was an American poet, novelist, and literary critic, and was one of the founders of New Criticism. He was also a charter member of the Fellowship of Southern Writers. He is the only person to have won Pulitzer Prizes for both fiction and poetry. He won the Pulitzer in 1947 for his novel All the King's Men (1946) and won his subsequent Pulitzer Prizes for poetry in 1957 and then in 1979.
