Stevenson was on a long speaking tour in the United States, as British writers did in those days. It being Christmas, this was the talk, not long, possibly it really was a Sunday sermon.
Although I've read some of the adventure stories as a young person, the reading was for the story. Now with this, I realize he was witty and insightful and had a really nice turn of phrase. No wonder he was successful.
