Having made her name with the Bethlehem label in 1953, Chris Connor switched to Atlantic Records in 1956. She was given greater control over both the songs she chose to sing and the musicians she wished to record with, resulting in highly polished recordings during the six years she remained with the label. Sings Ballads Of The Sad Cafe, released in 1959, ranks alongside her best recordings from the era and is probably the best known of her Atlantic recordings.
