Αυτός ήδη διάσημος συγγραφέας κι αυτή μια από τις σπουδαιότερες πολεμικές ανταποκρίτριες του αιώνα. Ο πεντάχρονος γάμος του ήταν γεμάτος περιπέτειες. Πρώτη και κύρια στάση ο Ισπανικός Εμφύλιος του 1936-39. Η Γκέλχορν έμελε να είναι η μόνη γυναίκα που ζήτησε διαζύγιο από τον συγγραφέα, ενώ ενέπνευσε το μυθιστόρημα Για Ποιον Χτυπά η Καμπάνα.
