Bernie (Black) is de geliefde begrafenisondernemer in een klein stadje in Texas. Zelfs de rijkste en gemeenste weduwe (MacLaine) van de stad is gek op hem. Niemand kan een verkeerd woord zeggen over Bernie – zelfs niet als hij een bijzonder wrede misdaad pleegt. Hij vermoordt de weduwe en hij spaart zich nadien geen moeite om de illusie te wekken dat ze nog steeds leeft.
