In her many years as a social worker, Emily Jenkins believes she has seen it all, until she meets 10-year-old Lilith and the girl's cruel parents. Emily's worst fears are confirmed when the parents try to harm the child, and so Emily assumes custody of Lilith while she looks for a foster family. However, Emily soon finds that dark forces surround the seemingly innocent girl, and the more she tries to protect Lilith, the more horrors she encounters.

Emily Jenkins is een sociaal werkster voor families met problemen. Ze heeft allerhande soorten van ellende wel gezien, maar haar ontmoeting met de 10-jarige Lilith is wel erg bijzonder. Het meisje wordt mishandeld door haar ouders en Emily is bang dat ze haar zullen vermoorden. Emily probeert van alles om het meisje uit huis te plaatsen en neemt haar ondertussen zelf in huis, maar na verloop van tijd ontdekt Emily dat de zaak iets gecompliceerder ligt en Lilith misschien niet zo onschuldig is als ze lijkt.
