'War Horse' volgt een jongeman genaamd Albert (Jeremy Irvine) en zijn paard Joey. Hun band wordt verbroken wanneer Joey verkocht wordt aan het leger en meegenomen wordt voor het gebruik in de Eerste Wereldoorlog. Ondanks dat Albert nog te jong is om zich in te schrijven voor het leger, besluit hij toch naar Frankrijk te gaan om zijn vriend te redden.
