True Detective è una serie televisiva statunitense creata ed interamente scritta da Nic Pizzolatto, che ha debuttato il 12 gennaio 2014 sul canale via cavo HBO. È concepita come una serie antologica, che ad ogni stagione rinnova interpreti e storia.
La prima stagione, ambientata in Louisiana, ha per protagonisti Matthew McConaughey, Woody Harrelson, Michelle Monaghan, Michael Potts e Tory Kittles.
Le vite dei detective Rust Cohle e Marty Hart si intrecciano inesorabilmente nella lunga caccia a un serial killer in Louisiana, durata diciassette anni. Attraverso archi temporali diversi, vengono raccontate le vite e le indagini dei due detective, dal 1995 al 2012, anno in cui il caso viene riaperto.
